Rahal and Malukas miss qualifying for IndyCar Nashville race

Graham Rahal and David Malukas were unable to complete qualifying laps for the IndyCar Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix at Nashville Superspeedway on July 18, 2026. The second-generation driver Rahal faced a mechanical failure moments before his attempt, while Malukas was involved in a practice crash that required medical attention.

Rahal’s No. 15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing car stalled out due to a suspected fuel pressure issue. The driver confirmed the technical fault to his team, stating, "No fuel pressure won't run." Under IndyCar regulations, competitors must depart the qualification line within 60 seconds of receiving the signal. Because Rahal could not complete his run, he was assigned a scheduled starting position of 25th for the 300-lap race.

Malukas encountered a separate incident during morning practice, crashing his No. 12 Team Penske Chevrolet. He was taken off-site for medical attention, and his availability for the July 19 race remains unconfirmed. Team Penske has indicated that Conor Daly is available to assist with shaking down Malukas’ car in final practice if required.

The situation mirrors previous challenges at the venue for Malukas, who was airlifted for medical attention after crashing in the 2025 Music City Grand Prix. Rahal also faced difficulties in the 2025 event, where he qualified 22nd and finished 17th. He currently sits 13th in the 2026 IndyCar standings.

The IndyCar Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix is scheduled to start at 4:40 p.m. on July 19 at the 1.33-mile tri-oval. While Rahal’s grid position is settled, the outcome for Malukas depends on medical clearance and the team’s ability to prepare the vehicle in time for the race.
