David Blough will call plays in an NFL game for the first time when the Washington Commanders face the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1, placing the new offensive coordinator in charge of a high-profile opening test.

Commanders head coach Dan Quinn told Yahoo Sports that Blough had enjoyed a “fantastic offseason” and stood out through his collaboration with Washington’s coaching staff. Quinn said he had spent Blough’s first two coaching seasons preparing him for the role.

Blough has also worked closely with quarterback Jayden Daniels, helping design an offence around the quarterback’s skills with input from Daniels. Their partnership will form a central part of Washington’s offensive approach.

Quinn described Blough as aggressive, thoughtful, decisive and quick to adapt, and said he expected him to become an excellent NFL playcaller. Those assessments remain a projection, however, rather than an established outcome.

The first challenge comes against Philadelphia, described by the source as the two-time defending NFC East champion, with Vic Fangio coordinating its defence. Quinn acknowledged that NFL playcalling is difficult and that success will depend on both the matchup and execution.

Quinn said confidence in Blough’s long-term potential did not guarantee a smooth opening game. The Commanders’ first outing will provide the initial test of whether Blough’s preparation can translate into decision-making under NFL conditions.
