Qi2.2 wireless charging standard doubles power output for smartphones
The new Qi2 25W standard reduces charging times to half an hour and improves thermal management, a significant upgrade over the previous 15-watt limit.

Engadget has published a comparative analysis detailing the technical distinctions between the Qi2 and Qi2.2 wireless charging standards, highlighting the latter's superior power delivery capabilities. The newer standard, also known as Qi2 25W, offers a substantial boost in performance for compatible devices, marking a notable evolution in mobile charging infrastructure.
The primary difference between the two standards lies in power output. While the standard Qi2 protocol is capped at 15 watts, Qi2.2 delivers 25 watts of power. This increase translates directly into faster charging speeds, allowing users to reach a 50 per cent battery level in approximately 30 minutes. In contrast, devices using the older Qi2 standard typically require between 50 and 80 minutes to achieve the same charge level from zero.
Given that wireless charging has traditionally been less efficient than wired alternatives, this reduction in charging time represents a welcome improvement for consumers. The faster power transfer addresses a common criticism of wireless technology, making it a more viable option for quick top-ups during busy schedules.
Beyond speed, Qi2.2 incorporates improved thermal protection features. These enhancements lower the peak temperatures reached during the charging process, which can help extend the overall lifespan of a smartphone's battery. Although the temperature difference may not be immediately perceptible to users, the reduced heat stress is a potential benefit for long-term device health.
Support for the new standard is expanding across major platforms. Engadget notes that Qi2 25W is supported by iPhones and select Android smartphones. Notably, the recently announced Pixel 11 lineup lists the new speed as a supported feature, indicating that Google is now embracing the faster protocol after being slow to adopt the initial Qi2 standard.
The distinction between Qi2 and Qi2.2 is becoming increasingly relevant for consumers purchasing new hardware. As manufacturers integrate the 25-watt capability into their devices, users can expect a more efficient and thermally managed charging experience compared to previous generations of wireless technology.
