Qatar secures 2026 World Cup berth via AFC play-off victory
The Asian Football Confederation qualifiers confirm Qatar’s return to the global stage, marking their first qualification through standard sporting processes rather than host nation status.

Nineteen days prior to the commencement of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Qatar has officially secured its place in the tournament following a 2-1 victory over the United Arab Emirates in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) qualifying play-offs. The result, driven by second-half goals from Pedro Miguel and Boualem Khoukhi, ensures the nation’s participation in the expanded 48-team field.
This qualification marks a distinct shift in the country’s international football trajectory. Having hosted the 2022 edition and received an automatic berth, this represents the first instance in which Qatar has earned its spot through the standard competitive qualification pathway. The team advanced to this final stage after finishing second in Group A behind Uzbekistan, missing out on automatic qualification by six points.
Under the management of Julen Lopetegui, a former coach of Spain and Real Madrid, the squad navigated a challenging third round of AFC qualifying. After drawing with Oman in the play-off group, a win against the United Arab Emirates was required to secure a place in the final stage. The victory confirms their progression to the tournament proper.
For the 2026 finals, Qatar has been drawn into Group B. They will compete alongside co-hosts Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Switzerland. The tournament is scheduled to run from 11 June to 19 July 2026, marking the first time the event is jointly hosted by three nations: Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
The squad faces the task of improving upon their performance in the 2022 tournament, where they lost all three group matches against the Netherlands, Senegal, and Ecuador, scoring one goal and conceding seven. Lopetegui’s side now turns its attention to the upcoming group stage fixtures in North America.
