French club becomes second team to win back-to-back titles since 1992 rebranding

Paris Saint-Germain retained their UEFA Champions League title on Saturday, defeating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties in the final held at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary. The victory secures the French club’s second consecutive European crown, making them only the second team to achieve back-to-back wins since the competition was rebranded in 1992.

The match concluded in a 1-1 stalemate after extra time, following goals from Kai Havertz for Arsenal and Ousmane Dembélé for PSG. Havertz had given Arsenal an early lead, capitalising on a rebound from Marquinhos’ clearance to fire a shot into the roof of the net. However, Arsenal were pegged back in the second half when Cristhian Mosquera fouled Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the penalty area. After a significant delay for a VAR check, Dembélé converted the spot-kick to level the scores.

The decisive moment arrived during the penalty shootout when Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães missed the final kick, firing over the crossbar. This error allowed PSG to secure the 4-3 victory. The result marks the first Champions League final to go to a penalty shootout since Real Madrid defeated Atlético Madrid ten years ago.

By retaining the title, PSG joins Real Madrid, who won three successive titles between 2016 and 2018, as the only teams to successfully defend the Champions League in the modern era. Overall, PSG is the 10th team in European Cup history, dating back to its establishment in 1955, to win consecutive titles.

For Arsenal, who ended a 22-year Premier League title drought earlier this season, the wait for a first European crown continues. The defeat mirrors their only previous Champions League final appearance 20 years ago, where they also took an early lead but were ultimately pegged back in the second half.
