Ousmane Dembélé named player of the year in France for second straight year
The accolade highlights institutional resilience within the club's hierarchy despite a campaign marked by significant individual absence.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembélé has been named the Ligue 1 player of the year for the second year running, a decision announced on Monday by the league's governing body. The award recognises individual excellence within the context of the team's broader success, a sentiment explicitly echoed by Dembélé who credited the collective unit for his individual trophies.

The accolade marks a significant institutional achievement, as Dembélé becomes only the fifth player in history to win the award in consecutive years. He joins a select group that previously included Zlatan Ibrahimović, who last achieved this feat in 2014. This recognition follows his tenure succeeding Kylian Mbappé, who held the prize for five consecutive seasons before departing for Real Madrid.

The award carries particular weight given the structural challenges Dembélé faced during the campaign. Despite an injury-plagued season where he started just nine matches compared to 20 the previous year, he delivered 10 goals and six assists. His performance included 960 minutes of gametime, a reduction from the 1,736 minutes recorded last season, yet he remains a critical component of the club's strategic objectives.

This individual recognition coincides with the club's push to secure its fifth consecutive Ligue 1 title and the 12th in the last 14 years. PSG effectively wrapped up another title on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Brest, leaving them six points clear of nearest rivals Lens with two games remaining. The club will be officially crowned French champions for the fifth season running if they avoid defeat away to second-placed Lens on Wednesday.

Beyond domestic dominance, the institution is preparing for a high-stakes Champions League final against Arsenal. The club reached this stage after edging Bayern Munich 6-5 on aggregate in their semi-final. The award for best young player went to teammate Desiré Doué, while Pierre Sage was named best coach after establishing his side, Lens, as a direct challenger to the capital club.
