PSG edge Marseille 2-1 as Torres strikes again in Le Classique
Ferran Torres opened the scoring before Marquinhos restored Paris Saint-Germain’s lead, leaving Marseille with five straight defeats in all competitions.
Paris Saint-Germain defeated Marseille 2-1 in Ligue 1’s Le Classique on Sunday, extending the hosts’ losing run and strengthening the champions’ position in the early league table.
Ferran Torres put PSG ahead in the 66th minute, heading in a cross from Desire Doue after coming off the bench. France 24 reported it was his seventh goal in six appearances for the club since joining from Barcelona.
Marseille equalised through Angel Gomes in the 72nd minute, but PSG captain Marquinhos restored the visitors’ advantage three minutes later. The Brazilian defender bundled in the rebound after his first effort was saved by Marseille goalkeeper Jeffrey de Lange.
Marseille were reduced to 10 men when Timothy Weah, a former PSG player, was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
The defeat was Marseille’s fourth consecutive loss in Ligue 1 and fifth in all competitions. The club remained in the relegation zone ahead of a three-week break for international football.
PSG moved up to sixth, five points behind leaders Monaco after five matches, according to France 24.
