Jubilant PSG fans celebrate Champions League victory by the Eiffel Tower
Interior Minister reports seven officers wounded as security forces detain hundreds following victory celebrations

Paris Saint-Germain secured their second consecutive UEFA Champions League title on Saturday night, defeating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the Puskas Arena in Budapest. The victory, which ended a 22-year drought for the English side, triggered immediate and massive celebrations across France, with thousands of supporters gathering near the Eiffel Tower on Sunday. However, the jubilation was accompanied by significant disorder, prompting a robust security response from French authorities.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed that the celebrations were blighted by violent clashes, vandalism, and a fatal road accident. In his address on Sunday morning, Nunez reported that seven police officers had been wounded during the incidents and described the unrest as unacceptable. The damage extended to vehicles and local businesses, underscoring the severity of the disturbances that erupted in the early hours of Sunday following the final.

To manage the anticipated crowds and prevent further disorder, approximately 22,000 police officers and gendarmes were deployed across the country. The heightened security presence resulted in widespread detentions, with a total of 416 people held nationwide. Of these, 283 arrests occurred specifically in Paris, reflecting the concentration of both celebrants and unrest in the capital.

The scale of the official response contrasted with the chaotic scenes that unfolded in several cities. While the club had previously held a massive trophy presentation attended by roughly 90,000 supporters, the subsequent nights saw a shift from organised celebration to uncontrolled incidents. Authorities worked through the night to contain the violence and restore order in affected areas.

The events highlight the complex security challenges associated with major sporting victories in urban centres. As PSG cements its status as the current European champions, the French government faces scrutiny over its ability to manage public gatherings while maintaining public safety. The 416 detentions serve as a stark indicator of the tensions that emerged between celebratory crowds and law enforcement during the aftermath of the final.
