Prime Video and HBO Unveil Slate of High-Profile Series at San Diego Comic-Con

Prime Video dominated the San Diego Comic-Con stage with the debut of its first teaser for Blade Runner 2099, a ten-episode series set fifty years after the events of Blade Runner 2049. The showrunner, Silka Luisa, joined stars Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer to present the footage, which depicts a world where humans have lost an uprising and are now second-class citizens. Yeoh plays Olwen, a dying Replicant, while Schafer portrays Cora, a fugitive who assumes the identity of a Blade Runner to hunt a runaway threatening the city’s stability. The series is scheduled to premiere on November 25, 2026.
In a separate announcement, Prime Video revealed a teaser for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3, focusing on Charlie Vickers as Sauron forging the One Ring. The narrative follows five years after the fall of Eregion, with Middle-earth at war and Sauron’s armies conquering vast territories. The season introduces new cast members including Jamie Campbell Bower as Celeborn and Simon Pegg voicing a Balrog, with the new episodes arriving on November 11, 2026.
HBO shifted focus to its DC Universe series Lanterns, releasing a full trailer that emphasises a sci-fi noir tone over traditional superhero tropes. Starring Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, the series follows two intergalactic police officers investigating a murder in the American heartland across two timelines: 2016 and 2026. The trailer also highlighted the inclusion of shapeshifting Manhunters and a rogue Sinestro, with a premiere date set for August 18, 2026.
Amazon MGM Studios took a different approach with Spaceballs: The New One, presenting a panel that parodied the grandeur of typical franchise announcements. The sequel, written by Josh Gad and pitched to the late Mel Brooks, features Rick Moranis and Bill Pullman reprising their roles as Lord Dark Helmet and Lone Starr. Brooks will voice Yogurt via motion capture, while Lewis Pullman and Keke Palmer join the cast. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 23, 2027.
