2026 Memorial Tournament leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler grinds to make cut, 10 shots off lead entering weekend
Defending champion Scottie Scheffler faces a 10-shot deficit after J.T. Poston’s 7-under 65 separates him from the field at Muirfield Village.

J.T. Poston has established a four-shot lead over Ryan Gerard heading into the weekend of the 2026 Memorial Tournament, capitalising on a 7-under 65 on Friday. The round, played under firm conditions and strong winds at Jack Nicklaus’ Muirfield Village course, saw Poston marry his renowned putting with exceptional ball-striking to gain more than nine strokes on the field. His performance positioned him solo at the top, creating a significant buffer against a tightly packed group of contenders.

Defending champion Scottie Scheffler, who entered the day 10 shots behind Poston, struggled with iron play and distance control before rallying to make the cut. Ranking 59th out of 72 players in strokes gained approach, Scheffler lost more than two shots to the field with his wedges and irons. Despite a late surge of three birdies in his final five holes to finish at 1 over, his approach play remains a concern as he attempts to overcome the deficit.

The difficult conditions at Muirfield Village impacted the wider field significantly, with several top players barely securing their weekend spots. Rory McIlroy and Ludvig Åberg made the cut on the number at 1 over and 5 over respectively, while Justin Thomas also survived at 5 over. The firm turf and wind gusts created a stiff test, forcing many competitors to grind through the second round in Dublin, Ohio.

Ryan Gerard held the lead for much of the morning before Poston caught him, but the 26-year-old is building on the form from a T10 finish at last week’s Colonial tournament. Sam Burns sits in third place at 6 under after shooting 69 in both rounds, while Tommy Fleetwood moves into fourth at 4 under. Fleetwood’s Thursday 67 relied heavily on scrambling, raising questions about his ball-striking consistency as the tournament progresses.

Other notable players in contention include Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, and Wyndham Clark, who are tied at 2 under. Alex Fitzpatrick, Aaron Rai, and Shane Lowry are tied at 1 under. Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth, last year’s runner-up Ben Griffin, and Rickie Fowler failed to make the cut, highlighting the severity of the challenge presented by the course.

Despite Scheffler’s 10-shot deficit, sportsbooks have priced him with the sixth-best odds, reflecting low confidence in a comeback. The bookmakers’ stance suggests a lack of interest in paving the way for a large payout if the defending champion were to catch fire. Poston and Gerard are expected to dictate the pace, with any slip-up potentially opening the door for the broader group of contenders.

The Memorial Tournament has historically been a venue for dramatic comebacks, with Scheffler making up a three-shot deficit to win by four last year. However, maintaining a high level of play over 72 holes at Muirfield Village has proven difficult for previous leaders. Poston’s four-shot lead and the tight grouping behind him suggest a competitive weekend, with only five shots separating the top five from the T19 group.

As the tournament enters its final two rounds, the focus shifts to whether Poston and Gerard can maintain their separation or if the depth of the field, including established winners like Cantlay and Schauffele, will close the gap. The conditions that have tested the field so far will likely remain a decisive factor in determining the champion.
