Pope Leo to Inaugurate Tallest Church Spire in Barcelona
The 172.5-metre Tower of Jesus Christ elevates the Sagrada Familia to the world’s tallest church status as the Pontiff prepares to lead Mass and bless the exterior structure.

Pope Leo is scheduled to visit Barcelona on Wednesday to inaugurate the newest spire of the Sagrada Familia, a development that establishes the modernist structure as the world’s tallest church. The ceremony centres on the Tower of Jesus Christ, which stands at 172.5 metres and is crowned with a five-storey ceramic cross visible across the Catalan capital.
The inauguration of the soaring geometric spire completes a significant phase in the construction of the basilica originally designed by Antoni Gaudi. The addition of this specific tower alters the global hierarchy of religious architecture, granting the Barcelona landmark the distinction of height over other major cathedrals worldwide.
Following the formal inauguration of the exterior tower, Pope Leo will proceed inside the vast church to celebrate Mass. The liturgical events are designed to consecrate the newly completed architectural elements, blending religious tradition with the completion of a centuries-long construction project.
After the internal service, the Pope will return to the exterior to bless the Tower of Jesus Christ. This dual focus on interior worship and exterior architectural blessing underscores the significance of the spire’s completion to both the Catholic Church and the cultural heritage of Catalonia.
The event is being reported from Barcelona by FRANCE 24’s Sarah Morris, who is covering the logistical and ceremonial aspects of the Pope’s visit. The scheduled date for these events is Wednesday, 10 June 2026.
