Officials ruled John Love’s 36-yard attempt no good as time expired, leaving Pittsburgh with a 35–33 win. Available video has not settled whether the kick passed inside the upright.

Pittsburgh beat Virginia Tech 35–33 on Friday after officials ruled John Love’s 36-yard field goal attempt no good as time expired. The kick could have given Virginia Tech the win, but whether it passed inside the upright remains disputed.

Video angles have fuelled disagreement over the call. Former NFL referee Terry McAulay said no available camera angle definitively showed the ball’s position as it reached the uprights, making the kick unreviewable.

Virginia Tech coach James Franklin said he could not tell from his vantage point whether Love’s attempt was good. The official ruling stood.

Virginia Tech had led 24–14 in the first half, but finished with four turnovers and eight penalties for 82 yards. Those errors formed part of the game’s context as the Hokies came down to a final kick.
