Piper Sandler initiates Unusual Machines coverage with bullish rating on domestic drone demand
Unusual Machines (UMAC) sees a $38 price target as Piper Sandler highlights commercial growth potential, though execution risks loom over rapid capacity expansion.

Piper Sandler has initiated coverage of drone manufacturer Unusual Machines (UMAC) with a bullish "Overweight" rating and a $38 price target. The recommendation follows a $2.1 million U.S. government purchase order for domestically assembled drone systems, aligning with broader federal shifts towards domestic manufacturing and restrictions on foreign technology.
The analyst firm anticipates significant growth from the commercial market, noting that Unusual Machines supplies key components to more than half of the 11 winners in the first phase of the Pentagon's Drone Dominance competition. Piper Sandler posits that the company is well-positioned to capitalise on the onshoring of drone manufacturing by providing motors, batteries, and flight controllers.
This optimism coincides with regulatory headwinds for competitors. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is implementing bans on Chinese-made drones and components, including a potential crackdown on foreign-made drones equipped with LiDAR obstacle-avoidance features. These policy shifts have bolstered the profile of U.S.-based producers like Unusual Machines, which operates factories in Orlando producing National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)-compliant gear.
Despite the positive outlook, Piper Sandler analysts highlighted execution risks associated with the company's plan to expand motor production capacity from approximately 15,000 units per month to over 100,000 units. The expansion relies on a new automated production line in Orlando, with analysts questioning whether Unusual Machines can effectively turn this increased capacity into revenue generation.
Financial metrics reflect the company's rapid scaling. For the second quarter, Unusual Machines' revenue increased almost eightfold year-on-year to $16.72 million, with gross margins swelling to $5.80 million. The company's stock has gained 159.9% over the past 52 weeks and 113.8% year-to-date, reaching a 52-week high of $34.36 on June 2.
Wall Street consensus remains positive, with a consensus price target of $37.71 representing a 38.4% upside from current levels. Other analysts maintaining positive outlooks include Needham, which holds a "Buy" rating with a $40 target, H.C. Wainwright, which initiated coverage with a "Buy" and $42 target, and Roth Capital, which maintains a "Buy" rating with a $40 target.
