Pietersen given licence to challenge England’s white-ball coaching
The mentor says Brendon McCullum wants him to question the team’s approach, while his work with Harry Brook focuses on reading match situations without curbing his attacking style.
Kevin Pietersen says England white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum brought him into the coaching group to challenge the team’s approach and identify ways to improve players. Pietersen, a specialist mentor, has previously criticised England’s white-ball preparation.
Pietersen told Sky Sports Cricket that McCullum had invited him to question the coaching. He said he was looking for a balance between aspects of the team’s approach he supports and those he would change.
His work with captain Harry Brook centres on assessing match situations. Pietersen characterised Brook as sometimes feeling batting is “too easy”, but said he would not try to remove the batter’s flair.
England began Pietersen’s work with a 3-0 T20 series win over Sri Lanka, followed by a 2-1 ODI series victory. The report says England’s T20 side had won 22 of its previous 25 completed internationals and held the world No. 1 ranking, while the ODI side was sixth.
McCullum said his focus is to make England the world’s best white-ball team ahead of the 2027 World Cup. He said the side still had room to improve and would need to reproduce strong performances consistently at the tournament.
