Pierzynski recalled presenting Pope Leo XIV with the ball from the final out of Game 1 of the 2005 World Series. He was the catcher for the title-winning White Sox; the source says the Pope grew up supporting the team.
Asked what advice he would give Salas, Pierzynski said to enjoy the postseason and listen to experienced teammates, including Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts. He reflected that players can be so focused on the task at hand that they miss the chance to take in the moment.
Pierzynski described the Cubs–White Sox rivalry as the most fun and electric he had experienced, saying Chicago becomes “absolutely electric” when both teams are playing well.
