Injuries reshape Athletics’ season as club falls short of contention
The Athletics finished 64-98 after five key opening-day players each missed more than 60 games. Manager Mark Kotsay called the injury toll unlike anything he had seen in five seasons with the club.

The Athletics’ season ended with a 64-98 record, well short of the club’s expectation of contending. Manager Mark Kotsay said the scale of the injuries was unlike anything he had experienced in five seasons managing the team.
Kotsay said the top five players in the opening-day lineup each missed more than 60 games. Nick Kurtz, Brent Rooker, Jacob Wilson, Shea Langeliers and Tyler Soderstrom spent a combined 340 games on the injured list. Langeliers was the only one of the five to finish the season, doing so as a designated hitter.
Interim general manager Dan Feinstein said the club was dissatisfied with the results but saw progress from young players who took on unexpected roles. He cited infielders Zack Gelof and Joshua Kuroda-Grauer and outfielder Henry Bolte.
Starting pitcher Luis Severino went on the injured list on 30 May with a strained right shoulder and did not pitch again that season. The club also placed infielder Max Muncy on the injured list with a knee injury in the final week.
The Athletics entered the season after going 35-29 following the All-Star break the previous year. They are scheduled to play a third and final season in Sacramento before a planned move to Las Vegas in 2028.
