Phillies stars welcome James as Sixers complete historic signing

Philadelphia Phillies stars Bryce Harper and Trea Turner have publicly welcomed NBA superstar LeBron James to the city following confirmation of his signing with the Philadelphia 76ers. The announcement came on the day James was set to begin his tenure at the Xfinity Mobile Arena, located directly across from Citizens Bank Park, prompting immediate reactions from major figures within the local sports community.

Harper, a cornerstone of the Phillies’ roster, described James as "one of the greatest to do it" and expressed confidence in his ability to handle the intense expectations that accompany his career. Harper noted that the pressure to win a championship is nothing new for James, citing the scrutiny the athlete has faced since his high school days. He emphasised James’ status as an "incredible competitor" who remains driven by a desire to win.

Trea Turner, who hails from Florida, revealed he had rooted for the Miami Heat during James’ tenure there, where the superstar secured NBA titles in 2012 and 2013. Turner expressed excitement about sharing the city with a basketball legend and highlighted the strategic implications of James’ arrival. The two-year agreement represents a historic minimum contract for James, who has earned over $581 million in salary across 23 NBA seasons. The deal includes a player option for the 2027-28 season, which would extend his career to a potential 25th season. By accepting the veteran’s minimum salary, James has created substantial salary cap flexibility for the 76ers, positioning them as serious contenders in the Eastern Conference following their acquisition of Brown.

James indicated in May 2025 that he had considered retirement following the 2025-26 campaign, stating he needed time to determine if he still loved the game.
