Phillies place All-Star pitcher Jesús Luzardo on injured list with shoulder inflammation

The Philadelphia Phillies have placed All-Star left-hander Jesús Luzardo on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation, three days after he was scratched from a scheduled start at Atlanta.

The move is retroactive to Saturday, making Luzardo eligible to return on 27 September, the final day of the regular season. An MRI showed no serious issues, but he did not throw on Sunday or Monday.

Interim manager Don Mattingly said the Phillies’ medical staff believed Luzardo was improving, while indicating he was not yet as far along as the club wanted. The priority, he said, was ensuring the pitcher was healthy before returning to competition.

Luzardo’s absence removes one of Philadelphia’s leading starters as the club pursues a playoff place. He was 14–5 with a 2.87 earned-run average and a career-high 221 strikeouts in 29 starts, earning his first All-Star selection this season.

His latest outing, on 7 September, was a two-hit shutout of Atlanta and the first complete game of his career. The Phillies recalled right-hander Grant Holman from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to fill his roster spot.

The injury update was reported by Fox Sports and The Associated Press. The 27 September date is an eligibility point, not confirmation that Luzardo will be medically cleared to return.
