Phillies extend winning streak to four games under new manager Don Mattingly

Manager Don Mattingly, described as a baseball lifer, assumed control of the team on Monday after the club fell 13 games behind .500. Before this season, the franchise had not been 10 games under .500 since the end of 2017, having finished with a 96-66 record the previous year. The decision to part ways with Thomson was not entirely unexpected given the team's struggles, and Mattingly has now guided the Phillies to four consecutive victories.

However, the recent success is tempered by the fact that the team has only faced the Giants and Marlins since the managerial transition. While the Phillies went 1-11 under Thomson before his departure, they had previously played against what appear to be two of the best teams in baseball, the Cubs and Braves. Consequently, the current four-game winning streak is viewed as a small sample size that may not yet indicate a sustained turnaround for the remainder of the campaign.

The victory was not without its complications, as the bullpen struggled in the final innings to protect a 6-1 lead entering the eighth frame.
