Philadelphia Cycling Classic Returns After Decade Hiatus with Community Focus

The Philadelphia Cycling Classic is set to return next month, concluding a ten-year absence from the city’s sporting calendar. The event, which has long been considered one of Philadelphia’s most recognizable traditions, will feature 32 teams competing on a course that includes significant local landmarks.

Robert Flexon, chief executive of UGI Corporation, outlined the logistical demands of the race, specifically noting the inclusion of the Manayunk Wall and Lemon Hill. Flexon stated that competitors will tackle the Manayunk Wall 14 times during the event, describing the course as a challenge for some of the world’s best cyclists while offering a family-friendly experience for the broader community.

To mark the occasion, a pep rally was held in Philadelphia where AmeriGas employees assembled 73 bicycles for donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence Region. Katheryn Fernandez, chief executive of Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence, confirmed the donation, noting that the bicycles are being distributed across the country as part of the organisation’s broader community support initiatives.

Former Mayor Michael Nutter, who formed Race Street to facilitate the revival of the event, attended the rally alongside Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham. Nutter emphasised the local appreciation for the athletes' resilience, stating that Philadelphians value the grit and athletic ability demonstrated by the competitors. Graham, a two-time Super Bowl champion, expressed satisfaction at the return of the event, describing it as a significant celebration for the city.

AmeriGas serves as the primary sponsor for the race, supporting both the competition and the associated charitable efforts. For residents unable to attend the event in person, the race will be broadcast exclusively on 6abc, with coverage available both on air and via streaming platforms.
