Pro Football Focus (PFF) has ranked the Tennessee Titans’ secondary 30th in the National Football League for the 2026 season, placing the unit near the bottom of the league’s defensive backfield hierarchy. The pre-season assessment highlights significant coverage issues and a scarcity of high-end performers, suggesting that the group remains a major question mark heading into the new campaign.
The ranking comes despite the franchise spending a substantial portion of its free-agent budget to revamp the position group under new head coach Robert Saleh. The team added several players, including Alontae Taylor, Cor’Dale Flott, cornerback Joshua Williams, cornerback Nazeeh Johnson, and safety Tony Adams, in an effort to address previous weaknesses. However, PFF’s evaluation indicates that these additions have not yet elevated the unit to the tier of elite coverage groups.
Statistical data from the previous season underscores the depth of the problem. Opposing quarterbacks recorded a 125.0 passer rating when throwing in the vicinity of the Titans’ secondary, while the team finished 23rd in the league in passing yards allowed per game. PFF noted that while teams such as the Patriots, Texans, and Broncos received praise for their defensive backfields, Tennessee lacked standout coverage production.
Specific player metrics further support the low ranking. Rookie safety Kevin Winston Jr. recorded an average depth of tackle of just 3.0 yards on run plays, the shallowest among all qualifying safeties. Additionally, incoming boundary corner Alontae Taylor is noted as the only defensive back to allow 20 passing touchdowns over the last three years, a statistic that complicates the narrative of improvement through new acquisitions.
The unit faces immediate logistical challenges as well. Cornerback Nazeeh Johnson is suspended for the first six games of the season, and Marcus Harris is the only returning cornerback from the previous year. The safety tandem will consist of Amani Hooker and Winston Jr., leaving the team with limited experienced options in the back end.
