New analysis by ESPN places the New England Patriots at the top of the league for youth, while the current Super Bowl favourite occupies the bottom spot, highlighting the divergence between immediate contention and long-term roster sustainability.
ESPN has published a comprehensive ranking of all 32 National Football League teams, evaluating their rosters based on the quantity and quality of players under the age of 25. Released on 1 September 2026, the assessment utilises a methodology that weighs starts, snaps, age-adjusted performance, positional value, and draft capital. The New England Patriots have secured the number one position, with the Houston Texans following in second place.
The evaluation underscores a distinct strategic dichotomy within the league. While a surplus of young talent offers significant advantages for long-term success and salary cap management through affordable rookie contracts, it is not a prerequisite for immediate competitive success. This is evidenced by the current Super Bowl favourite, which ranks last in this category, relying instead on veteran experience to drive short-term contention.
The Patriots’ top ranking is anchored by quarterback Drake Maye, who is identified as the most valuable young commodity in the NFL following a season where he threw for 4,394 yards. The roster features a concentration of youth across the offensive line and skill positions, including left tackle Will Campbell and centre Jared Wilson, alongside defensive standout cornerback Christian Gonzalez.
The Texans, who held the top spot for three consecutive years, have slipped to second as their primary stars, quarterback C.J. Stroud and edge rusher Will Anderson Jr., approach the age threshold. Despite this, the team retains a deep core of young players, including safety Calen Bullock and cornerback Kamari Lassiter, both aged 23, ensuring a strong foundation for future seasons.
Other notable inclusions in the upper echelon of the rankings include the Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, and Las Vegas Raiders, all of whom have invested heavily in young quarterbacks and draft picks. The analysis suggests that while teams like the Patriots and Texans are structuring for sustained relevance, others are prioritising veteran acquisitions to maximise their current window of opportunity.
