In the previous training camp, Maye played in the first two preseason games before sitting out the finale against the New York Giants.
Vrabel’s approach last week provides a precedent for Saturday’s decision. Following a successful joint practice with the Indianapolis Colts, the coach held out most starters, including Maye, for the preseason opener. Whether the Patriots will replicate this strategy after their recent sessions with Philadelphia remains unconfirmed.
The matchup also presents a critical opportunity for wide receiver Kayshon Boutte to improve his trade value. Boutte requested a trade out of New England this spring to maximise his earnings in a contract year, but a move has not yet materialised. He had the chance to impress the Indianapolis Colts during last week’s joint practice and game, but the receiver did not see a target.
The timing of the Colts’ moves has added complexity to Boutte’s situation. Indianapolis signed veteran receiver Keenan Allen to a one-year deal worth up to $8.32 million, opting not to pursue a trade for the 24-year-old despite having the chance to evaluate him. It remains unclear if Boutte will significantly raise his trade stock during the exhibition match or if he will ultimately start the season in New England.
The game also offers a look at the Patriots’ interior offensive line, though specific details on which players may step up remain to be seen. As with previous preseason fixtures, the primary focus for the coaching staff is evaluating depth and preparing for the regular season rather than securing a win.
