Rohan Rane, 29, went on trial in Paris on Monday accused of leading an online group that prosecutors and investigators say targeted minors through Discord and social media. The proceedings are being held behind closed doors.

Rane faces charges including torture or acts of barbarity against minors, organised extortion and disseminating child sexual abuse material. If convicted, he could face life in prison.

The Paris criminal court ordered closed proceedings after concerns were raised about alleged intimidation of victims and witnesses and the expected screening of abuse videos. The trial is scheduled to run through Friday.

Five US women, aged 18 to 21, have joined the case as civil parties and were expected to give evidence by video link. The investigation began after a November 2020 report to the US National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Rane was arrested in 2021.

The charges and allegations, including Rane’s alleged leadership role, remain to be determined by the court.
