The mayor of Paris has ordered investigations into the reported removal of women staff from the Eiffel Tower during a visit by a Hindu religious organisation.
The incident prompted employees to walk out, forcing the landmark to close for one day on Monday. The tower reopened on Tuesday morning, according to France 24 International.
The visit reportedly involved BAPS, the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha. Staff were reported to have protested after female colleagues were allegedly sidelined or removed from their positions during the group’s visit on Saturday.
The circumstances of the reported action, including who made the decision and why, have not been established. The mayor’s order marks the start of an investigation rather than a confirmed finding.
BAPS apologised for any pain or inconvenience caused. The Eiffel Tower says it receives nearly seven million visitors annually.
