Carolina Panthers coach Dave Canales has offered a favourable assessment of Darren Waller’s early progress, but the tight end’s availability for the season opener against the Chicago Bears remains unresolved.
Waller joined Carolina three weeks ago and was retained on the Panthers’ initial 53-man roster as one of five tight ends. Canales said he had adapted smoothly to the team’s playbook and terminology, despite coming from a different system in Miami.
The coach also described Waller as mentally prepared, hard-working and physically fast. Canales said GPS data recorded Waller reaching 20.8 mph during a route, a figure not independently verified in the supplied reporting.
Waller spent the 2025 season with the Miami Dolphins, recording 24 receptions for 283 yards and six touchdowns in 12 games. His retention gives Carolina another experienced receiving option at tight end, although Canales’ assessment does not establish what role Waller may have this season.
The Panthers are due to open their regular season against Chicago, but no confirmation has been given that Waller will be active for the game.
