Panthers defensive line depth reshuffled by injuries as Wharton coaches from sidelines
Carolina’s front office navigates a depleted defensive line unit, with second-year player Cam Jackson leveraging veteran guidance amid significant personnel setbacks.
The Carolina Panthers’ defensive line unit is operating under constrained personnel conditions as training camp progresses, with injuries to key contributors reshaping the depth chart. Nose tackle Bobby Brown III remains on the active/non-football injury list with a hamstring issue, while edge rusher Nic Scourton has been ruled out for the season following a knee injury sustained during the camp-opening session. These absences have elevated second-year defensive lineman Cam Jackson to fourth on the depth chart, placing him behind Derrick Brown, LaBryan Ray, and Jared Harrison-Hunte.
Amid these roster adjustments, the team is utilising the expertise of Tershawn Wharton, who is currently on the physically unable to perform list following neck surgery in May. The surgery, which surprised the Panthers’ front office and disrupted offseason planning, has kept the six-year veteran from active participation. Wharton, who signed a three-year, $45 million contract with the team prior to the 2025 season, has instead assumed a coaching role, instructing players on technique from behind the line of scrimmage.
Jackson, who recorded nine total tackles in nine games during the previous season, has actively sought Wharton’s guidance to refine his performance. The defensive lineman noted that Wharton’s approach mirrors that of a coach, providing specific feedback on plays and technique adjustments. Jackson described the value of having Wharton present, citing detailed instructions on hand movements and footwork to disengage from offensive linemen.
The Panthers’ management has attempted to offset the loss of experienced personnel through draft selections and internal development. General Manager Dan Morgan drafted Lee Hunter in the second round last April to address potential gaps in the roster. The coaching staff, led by defensive line coach Todd Wash, is focusing on developing prospects including Jackson, Hunter, Harrison-Hunte, and undrafted rookie Aaron Hall, leveraging Wharton’s institutional knowledge to accelerate their progression.
Wharton’s tenure with the Panthers follows a successful period with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he was a two-time Super Bowl champion. Prior to his recent surgery, he had missed eight regular-season starts due to multiple injuries but still managed to record 11 solo tackles and two sacks. As the team prepares to open the preseason in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game on 6 August, the defensive line unit must integrate these developmental efforts into a cohesive strategy despite the current personnel limitations.
