Pallister Claims 400m Freestyle Gold Over Ledecky at Pan Pacific Championships
Lani Pallister’s early lead proved insurmountable for Katie Ledecky in Irvine, with the series now tied ahead of the final freestyle event.
Australian swimmer Lani Pallister has secured gold in the women’s 400m freestyle at the 2026 Pan Pacific Championships, defeating American Katie Ledecky in a race that has significant implications for the remainder of the meet. Held at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine, California, the event marked Pallister’s second gold of the competition.
Pallister established dominance from the outset, challenging Ledecky immediately and taking a full second lead at the 50-metre mark. Her advantage extended to two seconds by the 150-metre mark, a cushion she maintained despite Ledecky’s efforts to close the gap. The American, widely regarded as the greatest women’s freestyler of all time, reduced the deficit to 1.84 seconds at the penultimate turn but could not overtake Pallister in the final 50 metres.
Pallister finished with a time of 3:58.42, while Ledecky took silver in 4:00.15. New Zealand’s Erika Fairweather placed third with a time of 4:02.35. The victory adds to Pallister’s growing tally, as she has now defeated both Ledecky and Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh in freestyle events during this week’s competition.
The race carries added weight as it sets up a rubber match in the 800m freestyle the following day. Ledecky won the 1500m freestyle earlier in the meet, giving her a 1-1 series lead against Pallister heading into their final duel. The 800m event serves as the closing freestyle race for both swimmers at the championships.
Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh, who missed the championship final during prelims, won the B-final in 4:00.58. This time would have placed her third in the main final, highlighting the competitive depth of the field and the stakes involved in the upcoming 800m race.
