Pakistan bowl out County Select XI as England opener Gay exits for duck
Emilio Gay’s early dismissal raises questions on fitness, while Pakistan’s bowlers dominate the first day of the three-day contest.
Pakistan have established a commanding position in their three-day practice match against the Professional County Club Select XI at Beckenham, dismissing the hosts for 305 runs. The performance offers a preliminary assessment of team selections and fitness levels ahead of the first Test of the three-match series, which commences at Headingley on 19 August.
England opener Emilio Gay’s participation in the match was immediately scrutinised given his recent shoulder injury sustained while playing for Durham. The 27-year-old’s concerns were not allayed as he was dismissed for a duck, caught by Salan Agha at second slip off the bowling of Mohammad Abbas. Gay failed to score from his 12 balls faced, marking a difficult start to his involvement in the tour.
The County Select XI innings was anchored by contributions from captain Tom Haines, Caleb Falconer, and Saif Zaib, who all scored half-centuries. However, the Pakistani attack, led by Mohammad Abbas with figures of 3-37 and Mohammad Ali with 3-23, ultimately restricted the hosts. Matthew Fisher, who is included in England’s 16-player squad for the first two Tests, provided a late resistance with an unbeaten 62 batting at number 10, while James Rew was dismissed for four.
In response, Pakistan’s batting lineup moved with purpose, reaching 44-0 at the close of play. Imam-ul-Haq and Azan Awais remained unbeaten, having seen out the final 13 overs of the day. The opening pair’s stability contrasts with the early struggles of the English opener, highlighting the disparity in form between the two sides on the opening day.
Both teams utilised more than 11 players in the match, a strategic move to provide match practice for the broader touring squad ahead of the Tests at Headingley, Lord’s, and Edgbaston. England will be led by Joe Root, who has been reappointed captain following Ben Stokes’ retirement, with Marcus Trescothick serving as interim head coach in the absence of new appointee Stephen Fleming.
