Castellanos, Durán and Sheets homer as Padres beat Mariners 7-4
San Diego completes season sweep and claims rivalry trophy as Castellanos and Durán deliver key hits

The San Diego Padres secured the Vedder Cup on Saturday, defeating the Seattle Mariners 7-4 to complete the season series. The victory, which improved San Diego’s record to 5-0 against its West Coast rival, was driven by offensive production from Nick Castellanos, Rodolfo Durán, and Gavin Sheets.

Castellanos provided the early momentum with a three-run home run in the second inning, his third of the season, which extended the Padres’ lead to 5-0. Sheets added a solo shot in the same inning, while Miguel Andujar contributed an RBI ground ball in the fourth. Durán, a 28-year-old catcher making his mark after 11 seasons in the minors, hit a two-run shot in the seventh to cap a difficult outing for Seattle’s Logan Gilbert.

Gilbert (2-4) allowed seven runs on five hits over 6 2/3 innings but struck out five batters to reach 941 career strikeouts, moving into fifth on the Mariners’ all-time list. Seattle’s J.P. Crawford homered and Cole Young drove in two runs, but the Mariners could not overcome the early deficit.

In the ninth inning, Durán hit a deep fly ball to center field, but Julio Rodríguez made a leaping catch above the wall to prevent a potential second home run for the catcher. Walker Buehler (3-2) pitched five innings for San Diego, allowing two runs, before five relievers finished the game. Jeremiah Estrada recorded his first career save in the ninth.

The Padres will look to maintain their dominance on Sunday when RHP Lucas Giolito makes his season debut for San Diego. He will face RHP George Kirby (5-2, 2.84 ERA), who is scheduled to start for the Mariners as Seattle seeks to avoid a season sweep.
