Padres’ Miller renders AI pitching simulators obsolete with mechanical dominance
Mason Miller’s 1.01 ERA and 49% strikeout rate in the 2026 season highlight a performance gap that advanced simulation technology cannot bridge.

San Diego Padres closer Mason Miller has effectively neutralised the utility of MLB’s Trajekt Arc pitching simulation technology, rendering the advanced AI tools useless for opposing hitters preparing for his 2026 season. Miller’s combination of an average fastball velocity of 101.2 mph, a short and rapid arm motion, and precise pitch tunneling creates a mechanical profile that exceeds the capabilities of current simulation machines.
Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy described the experience of facing Miller as feeling like a ball "exploding" out of the hand at speeds that defy radar gun readings. Muncy noted that while the machine can replicate a 100 mph pitch, it cannot mimic the specific acceleration and perceived velocity Miller generates, leaving hitters off-balance and unable to distinguish between his triple-digit fastball and his slider.
Miller leads the majors with an 18-for-18 save record and a 1.01 ERA, alongside a 49% strikeout rate, which is the highest among pitchers with at least 25 innings. Of the 104 batters he has faced this season, 51 have struck out and only 12 have recorded hits, all of which are singles. His last extra-base hit allowed was a home run to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on 5 August 2025, prior to his acquisition by the Padres.
The effectiveness of Miller’s delivery is attributed to his short arm motion and the tight spin of his pitches. Padres pitching coach Ruben Niebla explained that Miller’s throwing shoulder remains turned inward, creating a "short tension" that releases quickly. This mechanics allow Miller to maintain elite efficiency, with opponents slugging just .132 against him, a figure lower than the historical record of .166 set by Brandon Workman in 2019.
Miller’s slider usage has increased to a career-high 55.5% of pitches, resulting in an expected slugging percentage of just .064 against the pitch. He was acquired from the Oakland Athletics in July 2025 in a trade that sent top prospect shortstop Leo De Vries to Oakland. Since joining the Padres, Miller has recorded 47 scoreless appearances in 50 total outings, setting a franchise record with 34⅔ consecutive scoreless innings before recently allowing runs on two singles.
