Digital ethics professor Mariarosaria Taddeo describes fully indiscriminate systems following New Scientist report

A senior figure within the Ukrainian defence industry has revealed that a test involving fully autonomous drones took place approximately two years ago, resulting in confirmed casualties. The disclosure, cited in a report by New Scientist, indicates that the systems were programmed to destroy any target within a designated area without human intervention.

Mariarosaria Taddeo, Professor of Digital Ethics and Defence Technologies at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, has raised significant concerns regarding the implications of such technology. Speaking on FRANCE 24’s A propos, Taddeo described these autonomous systems as "fully indiscriminate," noting their inability to distinguish between combatants and civilians.

Taddeo emphasised that the design of these systems does not allow for discrimination between different types of targets, including children or the elderly. Consequently, she warned that such capabilities place civilian populations in direct harm's way, highlighting the ethical and legal challenges associated with the deployment of autonomous weaponry in conflict zones.

The revelation adds to the ongoing international debate on the ethical and legal implications of autonomous weaponry. As the conflict involving Ukraine and Russia continues, the development and testing of such systems have become a focal point for discussions on the future of warfare and the protection of non-combatants.

While the specific identity of the Ukrainian defence figure and the exact details of the test environment remain unspecified, the confirmation of casualties in a test setting underscores the rapid advancement of autonomous capabilities. Experts continue to monitor these developments closely as the technology evolves.
