Oregon and Notre Dame slide as Joel Klatt reshapes college football rankings
Fox Sports commentator Joel Klatt has revised his personal top 10 after Week 1, with Oregon falling from the top spot and Notre Dame also dropping.
Joel Klatt has reshuffled his personal college football top 10 after the opening week of the 2026 season, moving away from Oregon after the preseason No. 1 was taken to the wire by Boise State. Notre Dame also slipped, although the supplied rankings do not specify the full order or identify the new team at No. 1.
Ohio State, Texas, Georgia, LSU and Miami made strong cases in their season-opening wins, according to Klatt’s assessment reported by Fox Sports. The changes reflect one week of results and remain an early measure of how the teams are viewed.
Klatt also pointed to USC’s opening performances, praising its rushing attack and a defence that shut out Fresno State. He expressed hope that quarterback Jayden Maiava was healthy after appearing to be hurt late in the game.
Oklahoma’s 51–0 win over UTEP drew particular attention. John Mateer threw three touchdown passes, while Isaiah Sategna scored on a punt return and also contributed on offence.
Klatt’s outstanding question for Oklahoma is whether it can run the ball independently of Mateer. The team’s next opponent is Michigan, whose defence he considered relatively strong despite the Wolverines’ struggles.
At Indiana, Klatt was impressed by quarterback Josh Hoover as he took over from last season’s Heisman winner and national champion, Fernando Mendoza. Hoover was praised for his accuracy, timing, pocket movement and ability to create yards after the catch.
