Failing chemical tank forces thousands to evacuate in Southern California
Garden Grove incident prompts mass displacement of 40,000 residents amid rupture or explosion risks

Approximately 40,000 residents across six cities in Orange County have been ordered to evacuate following the structural failure of a storage tank containing methyl methacrylate at a GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove. The directive, issued on Friday, affects communities located roughly 49km from Los Angeles, as emergency responders work to contain a hazardous situation involving a highly flammable chemical used in plastics production.

The incident began the previous evening when one of three tanks at the facility, holding up to 7,000 gallons of the substance, began to fail. GKN Aerospace, which manufactures components for major aviation manufacturers including Airbus and Boeing, is the site of the emergency. Orange County Fire Authority Division Chief Craig Covey stated that the tank faces two potential outcomes: a rupture or an explosion.

Covey described a rupture as the "best-case scenario" relative to an explosion, noting that a leak would allow hazardous materials teams to neutralise vapours from a safe distance. In contrast, an explosion would pose a significantly greater threat to public safety. Firefighters have successfully reduced the tank’s temperature from a safe distance, buying time for crews to stabilise the situation and mitigate immediate risks.

Despite the urgency of the order, compliance has been incomplete. Garden Grove Police Chief Amir El-Farra reported that more than 4,000 residents initially refused to evacuate. Local Mayor Stephanie Klopfenstein issued a statement urging those remaining in the area to depart immediately, acknowledging the fear surrounding the safety of homes and pets but emphasising the seriousness of the potential hazard.

The disruption extends beyond residential areas, with more than a dozen schools in the affected zone closed. Authorities have not yet indicated how long the evacuation order will remain in place, leaving local institutions and businesses in a state of uncertainty as monitoring continues.
