OpenAI’s Sam Altman apologises over failure to report Canadian mass shooter
Sam Altman acknowledges institutional lapse in flagging Jesse Van Rootselaar's online activity prior to Tumbler Ridge tragedy

OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman has issued a formal apology regarding the company's failure to inform law enforcement about the concerning online activities of Jesse Van Rootselaar prior to a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. The tragedy, which occurred on February 10 and resulted in eight deaths, prompted a review of the firm's safety protocols and their assessment of potential threats.

Although OpenAI had suspended Rootselaar's ChatGPT account in June for misuse related to violent activities, the firm determined at the time that the usage did not meet the threshold for an imminent threat. Consequently, the company did not alert authorities to the account's status, a decision Altman now acknowledges in a letter shared by the Tumbler RidgeLines news site and Premier David Eby.

In the correspondence, Altman stated that OpenAI should have contacted police immediately upon banning the account. He wrote, "I am deeply sorry that we did not alert law enforcement to the account that was banned in June," noting that while words may not be enough, an apology was deemed necessary to recognise the harm and irreversible loss suffered by the community.

The apology follows a period of grieving and anger conveyed to Altman by Premier Eby and Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka. In his letter, Altman acknowledged that these officials had expressed the community's distress and agreed that a public apology was required to address the failure to flag Rootselaar as a threat during the initial assessment.

Altman reaffirmed a commitment made to the Mayor and the Premier to work with all levels of government to prevent future tragedies. He outlined that the company's focus would continue to be on collaboration with authorities to ensure such an event never happens again, while expressing deep condolences for the victims, including Rootselaar's mother and half-brother.

"I cannot imagine anything worse in this world than losing a child," Altman wrote in the statement. The letter serves as a formal admission of the gap between the company's internal risk assessment and the actual danger posed by the suspect's actions.
