O'Neal rebrands Wembanyama as 'Tim Robinson' following historic playoff double-double
Victor Wembanyama’s 41-point, 24-rebound performance in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals prompts Shaquille O'Neal to bestow a new moniker on *Inside the NBA*.

Shaquille O'Neal has bestowed a new nickname upon Victor Wembanyama, labelling the San Antonio Spurs centre "Tim Robinson" following a historic playoff performance. The moniker, coined during O'Neal’s commentary on *Inside the NBA*, combines the names of two Spurs legends, Tim Duncan and David Robinson, to reflect the young French player’s dominant inside play.
Wembanyama delivered a 41-point, 24-rebound performance to lead the Spurs to a 122-115 double-overtime victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. The win placed San Antonio ahead 1-0 in the series. O'Neal, a Hall of Famer known for his rigorous standards regarding physical play, cited Wembanyama’s "old school" style as the primary reason for the new title.
"His American name is Tim Robinson. He played like Tim Duncan and David Robinson," O'Neal stated. He noted that Wembanyama focused heavily on playing hard inside the paint, attempting only two three-pointers during the contest. O'Neal described the French phenom as the "first perfect big man that's ever been created," praising his blend of physical presence and skill.
The nickname honours Duncan and David Robinson, known as "The Admiral," who won five NBA championships together for San Antonio between 1999 and 2003. Wembanyama, previously known as "The Alien," has been recognised for blending the attributes of the two former icons. O'Neal’s comments were shared via a tweet from the @NBA__Courtside account on May 19, 2026.
While the Spurs fans have embraced Wembanyama’s unique skills and humble personality, it remains unclear whether the "Tim Robinson" moniker will gain traction beyond O'Neal’s commentary. Wembanyama now faces three more victories to reach the NBA Finals, with O'Neal suggesting the young star is poised to become the best in basketball.
