ESPN has released a comprehensive predictive analysis for the 2026 college football season, utilising its SP+ projections to run one million simulations. The study aims to quantify the odds for national and conference titles, offering a data-driven perspective on a season characterised by significant uncertainty.

Ohio State emerges as the preseason favourite for the national championship, with a 14.2 per cent probability of winning the title. Oregon follows in second place with an 11.1 per cent chance, while Notre Dame holds a 10.4 per cent likelihood. Despite these lead positions, the analysis suggests that even the top-ranked teams face substantial hurdles, with the odds of a Buckeye title roughly equivalent to a one-in-seven chance.

The report highlights the inherent volatility of the College Football Playoff (CFP). While seven teams possess a greater than 35 per cent chance of reaching the playoff, with Notre Dame leading at 71.6 per cent, the model predicts that only about four of these top-tier teams will qualify on average. This disparity underscores the difficulty in forecasting final standings, particularly given the impact of large transfer classes and complex conference schedules.

The simulations illustrate the wide range of potential outcomes, including scenarios where North Dakota State wins the national title in its first FBS season. Another simulated reality sees a 7-5 BYU team reach the final, demonstrating how unexpected results can occur within the 12-team playoff format. These examples serve to temper expectations, reminding fans that even well-regarded projections systems cannot guarantee definitive outcomes.

The analysis also notes that 59 teams have at least a one-in-20 chance of making the CFP, reflecting the competitive depth across the FBS. For the College Football Playoff committee, the evaluation of teams from conferences with nine-game schedules, such as the SEC, remains a challenge. The prevalence of 9-3 records among strong programmes may complicate tiebreakers and strength-of-schedule assessments in the coming months.

As the season kicks off in earnest, the data provides a baseline for expectations while acknowledging the randomness inherent in college football. The simulations suggest that while Ohio State, Oregon, and Notre Dame are the most likely contenders, the path to the title remains fraught with potential upsets and structural complexities.
