Police appeal for information after 39-year-old supporter attacked in Manhattan

The New York Police Department is investigating a violent assault on a 39-year-old San Antonio Spurs supporter in Manhattan following Game 3 of the NBA Finals. The incident occurred on West 47th Street after the Spurs secured a 115-111 victory over the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden, a result that levelled the series at 2-2.

According to police reports, the victim was surrounded by suspects who punched and kicked him before stealing his Spurs jersey. He was transported to a hospital where he was treated for facial cuts and bruising. The NYPD released surveillance images of the suspects just after midnight on Tuesday and has launched an appeal for information through its Crime Stoppers hotline.

The attack has drawn sharp condemnation from figures across the sports and entertainment industries. New York Knicks player Karl-Anthony Towns issued a statement emphasising the importance of mutual respect among fans, noting that the physicality of the sport should remain confined to the court. Towns described the violence as unacceptable and urged the public to remember that the event is ultimately a game played for enjoyment.

Actor and long-time Knicks fan Ben Stiller also addressed the incident on social media, stating that supporting one team does not justify disrespect towards fans of another. Stiller highlighted the need to show respect to fellow humans, acknowledging that while emotions run high during games, violence has no place in the fan experience.

This incident follows earlier disruptions in the series, including a court-storming event during Game 1 at the Frost Bank Center. As the series moves to Game 4, authorities continue to seek information regarding the identity and number of individuals involved in the West 47th Street assault.
