NYPD Enforces Secure Zone at Madison Square Garden for NBA Finals Game 4
Mayor Zohran Mamdani approves ticketed event as authorities cite past disruptions as justification for strict measures.

The New York Police Department has confirmed that a secure zone surrounding Madison Square Garden will remain active for NBA Finals Game 4 on Wednesday, maintaining strict security protocols despite President Donald Trump not being expected to attend the match. The decision follows significant disruptions and nearly two dozen arrests during a watch party for Game 3, prompting authorities to prioritise crowd control and public safety over the absence of high-profile political figures.
Starting at 4pm on Wednesday, the secure zone around the arena will be enforced, requiring all attendees to undergo screening. The New York Knicks have reiterated a strict no-bag policy, advising fans to leave bags at home and arrive early. These measures mirror the “TSA-style” security and traffic restrictions implemented during Game 3, which involved closing a 12-block area to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
The retention of these stringent protocols is a direct response to the chaos that occurred at a Bryant Park watch party during Game 3. Although a non-ticketed watch party was cancelled due to security concerns, violence erupted at a separate gathering, leading to numerous arrests. This incident has overshadowed the sporting event, shifting focus from the game itself to the logistical and security challenges faced by the city.
In an effort to mitigate further unrest, Mayor Zohran Mamdani has approved a ticketed watch party for Game 4. The event will feature restricted entry points, with attendees only permitted to enter on the west side of Sixth Ave at West 33rd St. The Mayor has explicitly stated that violence will not be tolerated, urging fans to be respectful as the city prepares for what he described as a historic and joyful moment.
The strict entry rules for the official watch party include a no-reentry policy; if attendees leave the designated area, they will not be permitted to return. This structured approach contrasts with the unmanaged gatherings seen previously and aims to provide a controlled environment for fans. The NYPD has confirmed that everyone attending the game or the watch party will be subject to screening, ensuring consistent security standards across all venues associated with the Finals.
While President Trump’s attendance at Game 3 necessitated an entirely new level of security that frustrated many fans, the current measures are being framed as a necessary precaution rather than a response to his presence. ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith had previously criticised Trump for the traffic disruptions caused by his attendance, a stance Trump responded to with personal insults. However, the security infrastructure remains in place regardless of political attendance, underscoring the priority placed on public order.
This incident follows a separate security breach during Game 1 in San Antonio, where a fan stormed the court to take a selfie with San Antonio Spurs player Victor Wembanyama. That incident resulted in lifetime bans for two individuals and highlighted the broader challenges of managing fan behaviour during high-stakes sporting events. The New York authorities are applying lessons from these incidents to ensure a secure environment for the remainder of the Finals.
