NWSL Championship to return to Audi Field in Washington, DC in 2026
The National Women's Soccer League has confirmed Audi Field as the venue for the 2026 title match, marking the second time the stadium hosts the event.

The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) has confirmed that Audi Field in Washington, D.C., will host the 2026 Championship on Saturday, 21 November. This marks the second time the venue has staged the league's final, having previously held the event in 2022 when the Portland Thorns defeated the Kansas City Current. The match is scheduled to air live on CBS and Paramount+ at 8 p.m. ET, continuing a five-year broadcasting streak with the network.
NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman described the nation's capital as a "premier destination for women's soccer," highlighting the city's "incredibly engaged fan base" and vibrant soccer culture. Berman noted that the championship would serve as a fitting culmination to a landmark year for the sport in the region, expressing confidence in the ability to deliver a significant event alongside partners including the Washington Spirit, D.C. United, and CBS.
The decision to return to Audi Field follows a period of sustained growth for the Washington Spirit, who have increasingly filled the 20,000-capacity stadium. In the 2026 season, three of the Spirit's five home games recorded official attendances of 19,000 or more, a metric that correlates with the team's on-field performance. The Spirit have reached the last two NWSL Championships, losing to the Orlando Pride in 2024 and Gotham FC in 2025, and now aim to become the first NWSL team to reach the final three years in a row since the North Carolina Courage achieved the feat in 2019.
Audi Field, which opened in 2018 as the new home for MLS club D.C. United, has established itself as a major hub for soccer in the United States. The venue has hosted both the U.S. men's and women's national teams, the 2023 MLS All-Star Game, and three matches during the 2024 FIFA Club World Cup. The Washington Spirit became full-time tenants of the stadium starting in the 2023 season, following their previous spell at RFK Stadium.
The 2022 championship at Audi Field was notable for being the first NWSL final to air in a primetime slot, a precedent that will be repeated in 2026. That year, the Portland Thorns secured their third league title with a 2-0 victory over the Kansas City Current. The return of the championship to Washington underscores the league's strategy to anchor its season finale in markets with demonstrated capacity for high-profile sporting events.
