Nvidia is reported to be investing $3.5 billion in convertible bonds issued by Taiwan-based fabless semiconductor company MediaTek, as the companies expand their collaboration on next-generation artificial intelligence computing platforms.

The partnership will see MediaTek adopt Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion interconnect for custom AI accelerators. The technology is designed to allow those accelerators to connect with Nvidia’s rack-scale AI systems.

Yahoo Finance, citing the expanded collaboration, reported that the investment is intended to support MediaTek’s development of NVLink-compatible chips. The reported scope also includes cloud infrastructure, edge computing and automotive systems.

The deal comes as major technology companies develop their own AI processors. The collaboration could help keep custom accelerators within Nvidia’s broader rack-scale ecosystem, although the available source does not provide the bonds’ conversion price, maturity or completion status.

The reported transaction is structured as an investment in convertible bonds rather than an outright equity purchase. The source does not specify MediaTek’s intended use of the capital beyond chip development.
