Norway secure World Cup knockout berth with victory over Senegal

Norway have secured their place in the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup, defeating Senegal 3-2 in Group I on Monday. The victory, achieved in New Jersey, allows Norway to advance with one group match remaining, marking a significant milestone for the squad as they record back-to-back World Cup wins for the first time in their history.
Erling Haaland was instrumental in the result, scoring a brace to extend his international tally to 59 goals in 52 matches. Marcus Holmgren Pedersen opened the scoring late in the first half following an error by Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly. Haaland doubled the lead early in the second half on a counter-attack, capitalising on defensive frailties to move Norway into a commanding position.
Senegal mounted a spirited response, with Ismaila Sarr scoring twice to level the match at 2-2. Despite a late surge from the African side, which saw goalkeeper Edouard Mendy substituted for Mory Diaw, Norway held firm to claim the three points. The result leaves Senegal without a point in the group, forcing them to defeat Iraq in their final fixture to avoid an early exit.
The match took place against a backdrop of broader tournament developments. Earlier on Monday, France defeated Iraq 3-0 to secure their own progression, with Kylian Mbappé scoring a brace. Lionel Messi also marked the occasion by scoring a double against Iraq, bringing his total World Cup goals to a record 18.
Norway, who have lost only once in their last 18 matches, will now face France in Boston on Friday. The final group stage encounter will determine the top spot in Group I, adding further strategic weight to the upcoming fixture for both nations.
