Northwood/Solon Springs falls 14-12 to Frederic in 2026 season opener
A failed two-point conversion proved costly as Northwood/Solon Springs lost its VIII-player football debut to Frederic on Friday night.
Northwood/Solon Springs commenced its 2026 football campaign with a narrow 14-12 defeat against Frederic in the VIII-player division on Friday, 21 August. The match, reported by Yahoo Sports, saw the visitors struggle to convert late momentum into a victory despite a spirited comeback effort.
Quarterback Lincoln Coaty was central to the team’s offensive output, throwing for one touchdown and lateraling for another. Early in the contest, Coaty connected with Taven Nelson on a 36-yard pass, a play that tied the score at 6-6 with 4:12 remaining in the first quarter. This quick response highlighted the team’s ability to recover from an initial deficit.
However, Frederic regained control late in the first half, extending their lead to 14-6 at the halftime break. The hosts’ defensive pressure limited Northwood/Solon Springs’ scoring opportunities during this period, setting the stage for a tense second half.
In the third quarter, Northwood/Solon Springs mounted its final push. With 3:16 left in the period, Coaty carried the ball five yards before handing off to Tucker Madsen, who added another five yards to reach the end zone. The touchdown narrowed the gap to two points, but a subsequent failed two-point conversion attempt left the team short.
Frederic held the visitors off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game, securing the 14-12 win. The result marks the start of a challenging schedule for Northwood/Solon Springs, which remains on the road for its next fixture.
The team is scheduled to play an away match at Bruce on 28 September, followed by a home opener against Flambeau on 4 September. These upcoming fixtures will test the squad’s consistency as it looks to build on its offensive performances from the season’s opening week.
