Noblesville advances to Sectional 8 softball final after defensive shift
Pitcher Addi Retzinger and a redefined team culture propel defending sectional champions past HSE, with Haley Schatko tying the single-season home run record.

Noblesville secured its place in the Class 4A Sectional 8 softball championship on Tuesday, May 27, 2026, defeating Hamilton Southeastern 4-2 in the semifinals. The victory allows the Millers, who are defending their sectional title, to advance to the final against Westfield. Head coach Deke Bullard attributed the win to a late-season transformation in defensive cohesion and a collective shift away from individual statistics toward selfless team play.
Pitcher Addi Retzinger delivered a pivotal performance, throwing 111 pitches with 80 strikes to record nine strikeouts. She allowed two runs, one of them earned, on seven hits, effectively stranding runners in scoring position to keep the game within reach. Her efficiency and ability to limit extra-base hits were central to the team’s defensive strategy, which had been a focal point of their preparation following earlier rounds.
Haley Schatko provided significant offensive support, tying the single-season home run record with her 15th homer. The solo shot in the third inning came after Bullard instructed the senior to aim for the scoreboard in left-center, though she chose to hit it over the fence instead. Schatko, who holds a .543 batting average and 50 hits for the season, also executed a sacrifice bunt in the fifth inning to score Reese Newsom, extending the lead to 3-0 and exemplifying the team’s new emphasis on putting runs on the board over personal stats.
The Noblesville lineup received contributions from multiple players, with Maggie Kern recording three hits and both Newsom and freshman Lilly Brown adding two hits each. Brown drove in her 17th RBI of the season, while Newsom scored twice. Bullard noted that the team committed only two errors, a marked improvement from previous rounds where defensive lapses had proven costly. Fielders, including catchers who were playing out of position at first base, shortstop, and third, successfully tracked down foul pop-ups that generated crucial outs.
Westfield enters the championship game with momentum from back-to-back walk-off victories and is led by Maddie Moore, a former Noblesville player, and assistant Matt Moore. Bullard acknowledged the challenge posed by the opposing team, noting their resilience and competitive nature. The Millers will now look to consolidate their defensive improvements and maintain their selfless approach as they prepare to face Westfield in the final.
