Nintendo awarded $4.5 million in default judgment over Switch game piracy
The ruling also orders James Williams, known online as Archbox, to disable online shops alleged to have offered pirated games.
Nintendo of America has been awarded $4.5 million in damages in a lawsuit against James Williams over alleged sales of pirated Nintendo Switch games. The court also ordered Williams to disable online shops he operates or controls that offered the games for download.
The judgment was entered by default after Williams did not respond to the lawsuit in court. The allegations were therefore not tested through a contested response from him.
Nintendo filed the suit in 2024, alleging Williams was the “operator, overseer and driving force” behind several online shops selling pirated games.
Williams is known online as Archbox. Engadget reported he had been a moderator of the r/SwitchPirates subreddit, but said he does not currently appear on its moderator list. That reported role does not establish involvement in the alleged sales.
