Nine dead as Russia launches massive drone and missile offensive on Ukraine
Ukrainian authorities confirm at least nine fatalities and dozens of injuries following a coordinated strike involving 656 drones and 73 missiles, as US-led peace efforts remain suspended amid shifting geopolitical priorities.

Ukrainian authorities have confirmed that at least nine people were killed and dozens wounded following a large-scale Russian offensive across the country overnight. The assault, described by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko as a "mass enemy attack," involved the launch of 656 drones and 73 missiles, according to data released by Ukraine’s air force on Tuesday.
The heaviest casualties were reported in the capital, Kyiv, where four people were killed and 58 wounded, including two children. Explosions were heard across the city as air defence systems engaged incoming threats. Mayor Klitschko urged residents to remain in shelters, stating that the government had issued warnings regarding the potential for a major assault in the days leading up to the strikes.
In the central city of Dnipro, the impact was similarly severe, with five people killed and 25 wounded, three of whom were in serious condition. In the northeastern city of Kharkiv, ten people, including a child, were injured. Reporting from Kyiv, Al Jazeera correspondent Audrey Macalpine noted that many citizens had been sheltering in place following President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s nightly address on Friday, in which he warned of intelligence indicating Moscow was preparing a new massive strike.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence stated that the bombardment targeted Ukraine’s military-industrial complex, as well as energy and transport infrastructure used by the Ukrainian military. The statement claimed the "high-precision weapons" were directed at targets in Kyiv, Zaporizhia, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk.
In a reciprocal escalation, a Ukrainian drone strike killed one person in Russia’s Kursk region near the border with Ukraine, according to regional Governor Alexander Khinshtein. Another drone attack sparked a fire at an oil refinery in the southwestern city of Krasnodar, local authorities confirmed.
This escalation occurs against a backdrop of stalled diplomatic efforts. United States-led peace initiatives to end the war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, have largely been paused. The Trump administration’s current focus remains on conflicts in the Middle East, leaving the immediate diplomatic landscape for the Ukraine conflict in flux.
