Nikkei study finds US tech giants hold $1.65 trillion in off-balance sheet liabilities
A review of financial disclosures reveals that Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Oracle have amassed obligations exceeding their recorded debt, raising questions about duration risk and hardware depreciation.

A study by Nikkei, as reported by Yahoo Finance and Barchart columnist Rob Isbitts, indicates that five major US technology companies—Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Oracle—have accumulated approximately $1.65 trillion in off-balance sheet commitments. This figure represents an eightfold increase over the past four years and exceeds the $1.35 trillion in explicit debt recorded on these firms' balance sheets.
The commitments primarily consist of long-term data centre leases, multi-year semiconductor supply agreements, and joint-venture guarantees intended to secure hardware and facilities for artificial intelligence (AI) workloads. To construct the physical infrastructure required for large-scale computing without instantly expanding reported debt ratios, tech firms utilize deferred accounting mechanisms allowed under current financial standards, with costs detailed in footnotes rather than recognized as primary liabilities until equipment is delivered.
The specific concentration of these liabilities varies significantly among the firms. Meta Platforms holds the largest share at approximately $420 billion, which is roughly 2.8 times its recorded balance-sheet debt. Oracle has seen a 30-fold increase to $273 billion over four years, driven by long-term capacity agreements including the Stargate data centre initiative linked to OpenAI. Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon hold substantial long-term power purchase agreements and server acquisition commitments alongside reported cloud services backlogs.
Analysts highlight a financial risk arising from a duration mismatch: while hardware such as graphics processing units depreciates rapidly over 18 to 36 months, the associated lease and facility obligations span five to 20 years. Credit rating agencies have noted that this "shadow borrowing" obscures the true level of financial leverage carried across the sector, shifting the risk profile of major technology firms from capital-light software models to asset-heavy infrastructure operations.
As of the first quarter, the combined cloud business order backlog for Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet stood at $1.45 trillion. While executives argue these forward commitments are backed by contracted future demand, the sustainability of this model remains a point of contention. Most of the stocks trade at 20x to 25x trailing earnings, with Amazon at 35x, but the expansion of unrecorded obligations suggests that profit margins and debt-to-equity ratios may face pressure if end-user demand for computing capacity falls short of projections.
