Niceville advances to state semifinals with region title victory
Freshman Sydney Hann delivers walk-off hit while Chloe Bailey pitches through illness to clinch Region 1-5A championship
Niceville softball has secured its place in the FHSAA 5A Final 4, defeating Chiles 5-4 in extra innings to claim the Region 1-5A championship. The victory marks the Eagles’ second consecutive trip to the state semifinals, following their runner-up finish in the previous season. Freshman Sydney Hann delivered the decisive RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning, capping a complete-game pitching performance by Chloe Bailey.
Hann’s walk-off hit to right-center field came after Carnley Summerlin laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving courtesy runner Coley Gatwood to third base. The play set the stage for Hann to drive in the winning run, sending the team into a celebration that included sliding under a firetruck hose for region title photographs. The scoreboard reflected a tense contest, showing two Niceville leads of 3-0 and 4-3 that were erased before the Eagles ultimately prevailed.
Bailey’s performance was particularly notable given her physical condition. The starter pitched a complete game despite suffering an allergic reaction to medication, which left her covered in hives and experiencing itching prior to the first pitch. She allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out seven batters, with head coach Danny Hensley describing her effort as that of a warrior who pushed through significant adversity.
The win follows a 6-3 Sweet 16 victory over Gulf Breeze, where Hann also delivered a game-winning opposite-field home run. Hensley noted that he had encouraged Hann to be patient during her at-bat in the region final, a strategy that resulted in her second double of the night. Summerlin, who went 1-for-3 with an RBI, expressed pride in Hann’s clutch performance and her ability to compete under pressure.
Niceville, currently ranked No. 1 in 5A, will now have a week off before returning to play in the state semifinals. The Eagles are scheduled to face fourth-seeded Braden River at Boombah-Soldiers Creek Park in Longwood. Hensley stated that while the team will enjoy the region title, they will use the break to prepare for the upcoming challenge.
