Nicaragua to leave regional parliament after OAS rights resolution
The Foreign Ministry says the immediate withdrawal is an exercise of sovereignty, following an OAS call to restore civil rights and release political prisoners.

Nicaragua’s Foreign Ministry says the country will immediately withdraw from the six-country Central American Parliament, a regional body established to promote human rights and democracy. The government described the decision as an exercise of sovereignty.
The announcement followed a resolution passed by the Organization of American States (OAS) urging Nicaragua to restore civil rights and release political prisoners.
The move adds to Nicaragua’s departures from international and regional bodies after criticism of its human rights record. The supplied report says the country withdrew from the OAS in 2023 and the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2025.
A United Nations report released in September found Nicaragua’s government responsible for at least eight deaths in custody since 2018, according to the report. It also described inconsistencies in the government’s account of the death of Indigenous Miskito leader Brooklyn Rivera, who died in May after 32 months in detention.
The government attributed Rivera’s death to the effects of an earlier COVID-19 infection. Physicians for Human Rights called that assessment “not medically coherent”, the report said.
