The National Football League has suspended Atlanta Falcons defensive end James Pearce Jr for eight games without pay, citing a breach of the league’s personal conduct policy. The disciplinary action was confirmed by the Falcons on Friday afternoon, with the suspension set to take effect from 30 August 2026.
Pearce, aged 22, will be eligible for reinstatement on 2 November 2026, marking the end of his absence from the 2026 regular season. Until the suspension date, the player remains permitted to participate in team activities. The penalty follows his arrest in February in Doral, Florida, where he was charged in connection with an alleged domestic violence incident involving WNBA player Rickea Jackson.
The legal proceedings against Pearce involve multiple felony charges, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, fleeing and avoiding police, and resisting arrest. A fourth charge of felony aggravated stalking was subsequently downgraded to a misdemeanor. Under the reduced charge, Pearce is accused of following Jackson’s vehicle and making contact with it while she was attempting to reach a police station.
The suspension represents a significant setback for the Falcons, who invested considerable draft capital to secure Pearce’s services. Atlanta traded the No. 46 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and its 2026 first-round selection to the Los Angeles Rams, along with pick No. 101, to move up and select Pearce with the No. 26 overall pick.
In his rookie campaign during the 2025 season, Pearce recorded 10.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and 26 combined tackles across 17 regular-season games. The NFL’s decision underscores the league’s enforcement of its conduct standards, though the specific details of the policy violation remain tied to the ongoing criminal charges.
